Why this project was necessary

Fact fluency is important in math because number sense is a stepping stone to more complex problem solving. Fact fluency within 10 is also something that is expected to be mastered by the end of first grade. Building up these skills for students increases their confidence in their math skills as well as their motivation within the subject area. These foundational skills should be mastered in math because students will not be able to move forward in their problem solving if they do not have a mastery of the basic facts. Without a proper foundation, they will continue to struggle with both the academics and the motivation to learn in this subject area.

Quantitative Data

  • 2 out of 24 students showed proficiency in addition/subtraction fact fluency interview on their first Common Building Math Assessment.
  • 7 out of 24 students showed proficiency in addition facts on their Focus 1 test.*
  • 8 out of 24 students showed proficiency in subtraction facts on their Focus 1 test.*

*Our district breaks up our math curriculum into "focuses" or units.

Qualitative Data

  • My students were not applying the concepts I was teaching during mini lessons. The strategies needed to be successful with adding and subtracting these basic facts had been taught and therefore my quantitative data suggested that students were not successful with or were not using these strategies.
  • My students were not excited about math and were often off task during this time of day. I saw many unwanted behaviors during this time and a lack of engagement.
